This clearly shows the concept of having nothing in the room to detract the viewers from the screen! The wideangle lens distorts the size somewhat - the screen is 16' 6" in front of the front seats and is 15' wide 2.35:1

2 comments Mark_H Tue, 10 Oct 2006 11:03:14 -0500 Week 17: The Seating Area http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/22318

by: Mark_H

Description: Here is the completed seating area. Note that the spot lights are only used for cleaning (and for taking pictures!) The only lights in normal use are the strip LED lights which give the room a spectacular lighting effect. The projector is behind the second row of seating but cannot be seen because the room is so black. In front of the seating the room is completely featureless and black right up to the screen so there is nothing to distract the viewers from the screen.

37 comments Mark_H Fri, 15 Sep 2006 09:15:41 -0500 Week 17: The Entrance Well http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/22317

by: Mark_H

Description: When you enter the cinema you start off in a red well to differentiate the entrance from the rest of the room which is black. The strip LED lighting gives a very nice glow to the wall/floor/ceiling boundaries.

1 comment Mark_H Fri, 15 Sep 2006 09:14:59 -0500 Week 9: Rear Steps http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21515

by: Mark_H

Description: The steps leading up to the second row seating are now complete. Again, more acoustic slatting can be seen, in particular in the front section of the room now.

5 comments Mark_H Fri, 07 Jul 2006 12:43:50 -0500 Week 9: Full acoustics example http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21514

by: Mark_H

Description: Here we see the full range of acoustic work in action on the back wall of the room. Against the back wall acoustic foam covers the wall - this sucks out mid/high frequency reverberation. Between the wall and the wooden frame can be seen the floating bass traps. These suck out excess bass energy in the room. These neat devices are essntially a sandwich of acoustic foam and plywood. They are tied to wooden structure so that they "float" in the cavity. The slatting on the front of the wall is computer modelled to liven the room back up again as a dead room is pretty unpleasant.

9 comments Mark_H Fri, 07 Jul 2006 12:43:49 -0500 Week 9: Lower Seating Area http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21513

by: Mark_H

Description: Here you see the complete seating stage. Things to note: A pipe in the wall supplies cables from the electronics room to the "driving seat". A pull cable is supplied so that we can bring cables in at future dates. You can see a lot more acoustic work is now complete . The initial work deadens the room - the wooden slats are modelled to liven the room back up again in a controlled manner. The front row will contain four seats, while the higher platform will contain five seats.

5 comments Mark_H Fri, 07 Jul 2006 12:43:41 -0500 Week 6: Steps to seating area http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21303

by: Mark_H

Description: This image shows the steps to the seating area being built. As you enter the cinema you will climb these steps to the 2nd tier seating area. There will then be a couple of steps down to the front seating when complete.

1 comment Mark_H Sat, 17 Jun 2006 03:48:07 -0500 Week 5: Air-con http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21242

by: Mark_H

Description: Here you see the air-con. The noise spec for this service is NC-20. The air supply arrives through the trunking at the back of the room and is split at the manifold into six feeds. These feeds snake to the front third of the room where they are connected to a plenum. The effect is that the air gently washes out of the plenum across the width of the room and with no noise. It is in front of the front row of seats to avoid dumping air onto viewers seated there. On the side walls you can see the return-air pipes - these are mirrored on the opposite wall. Mark_H Mon, 12 Jun 2006 13:09:09 -0500 Week 4 - Rear of room http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21236

by: Mark_H

Description: Looking towards the rear of the room. Here we seen the lower ceiling at the rear and the air-con plennum at the front - this distributes the air flow over the entire width of the room cutting both noise (should be inaudible at this point) and air flow. There is more space behind the framing at the rear of the room, than at the front, to install bass-traps. This allows the front of the room to be as large as possible to accomodate the screen and also give a sense of scale to the room. Note that the metal cable trays were installed by the building contractor and removed by the acoustics contractor. Mark_H Mon, 12 Jun 2006 09:06:20 -0500 Week 4 - Front of room http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21234

by: Mark_H

Description: Looking towards the front of the cinema. The room's frame is pretty much complete. The room walls are covered in foam to add a layer of noise soundproofing and high frequency damping. Mark_H Mon, 12 Jun 2006 09:06:17 -0500 Week 1: Floating ceiling http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21233

by: Mark_H

Description: This shows the construction of the floating ceiling - the wooden frame is hung from isolating rubber supports. The ceiling then "soaks" up vibration significantly cutting noise transmission to the ceiling above it. Mark_H Mon, 12 Jun 2006 09:06:14 -0500 Plan for new cinema. http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php/photo/21232

by: Mark_H

Description: This is the floor plan for the new room. Things of note: Initial Room size: 35'(l)x21'(w)x12'(h) Finished Room size: ~30'(l)x~19'(w)x~11'(h) 15' wide 2.35:1 Screen Research Screen with 4-way masking. 9 seats on two tiers. The curves to the rear of the room are steps up to tier 2 seating. The dotted line is the rear ceiling profile which is lower than the front of the room - it will contain air-con ducting and acoustic treatments. The projector can hang at any position from the front seat to the rear of the room and has a dedicated air feed to keep it cool when used with hush box. All acoustic treatement behind the interior walls. Entire room is covered in black velvet, with black carpets. I am dispensing with all uneccessary visual frills to create a room in which the entire focus is on the screen. Seats are covered with black suede. Discrete, non-visible, lighting will be used illuminate the room for entry/exit. The acoustics spec for this room is that the room will offer a neutral transfer function to the speakers - in other words the room will add minimal colouration to the sound. Anything which cannot be treated physically will be addressed with a digital room correction processor.

4 comments Mark_H Mon, 12 Jun 2006 08:45:34 -0500
